How to Reach Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary


Nearest cities are Mysore and Bangalore. From Bangalore, you can plan on any weekend.

Distance from Bangalore - 130 km

Driving Time - 3hrs through new Bangalore Mysore Highway

Timing - 8:30 am to 5:30 pm


Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary - Activities and Best Time to Visit


Though the sanctuary is open throughout the year, but the best time to visit the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary is between June and November, because this is the nesting time for birds.

During winter months, starting from mid-December, as many as 40,000 birds congregate at Ranganathittu, some migrating from Siberia, Latin America and parts of north India. During January and February, more than 30 species of migratory birds can be found in the sanctuary.



Activities - You can enjoy a boat ride over Kaveri backwater with magnificent birds and deadly crocodile. There are more than 50 crocodiles are there in the bird sanctuary. It is a photographer's paradise. Also one can opt for solo boating. Even if you are not a bird enthusiast then also you will enjoy seeing these magnificent birds.



How to book solo boating at Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary


You can enjoy and do a solo boat safari from 6:30am to 7:30am with the permission from Forest department and prior booking. The cost is 2800/- which includes - camera charges, entry tickets, parking charges, and a professional guide. One can ask to take Swamy as a guide, he is very good.

Details of Sanctuary -

It is called Pelican's permanent home, approx 50 pelicans made their home at Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary. Roughly 170 bird species have been recorded. Of these, the painted stork, Asian openbill stork, common spoonbill, woolly-necked stork, black-headed ibis, lesser whistling duck, Indian shag, stork-billed kingfisher, egret, cormorant, Oriental darter, spot-billed pelican and heron breed at Ranganathittu regularly. The great stone plover, and river tern also nest there, while the park is also home to a large flock of streak-throated swallows.
