Updated: Oct 26, 2022

Journey towards the tip of India and the Ghost town.

Dhanushkodi is on the tip of Pamban island, separated from the mainland by the Palk Strait. It is an abandoned town at the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island of the state of Tamil Nadu in India and it is about 24 kilometres or 15 miles west of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The town was destroyed during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and remains uninhabited in the aftermath.

  • 1. Long endless drive: If you have the urge to drive freely please do visit this place as you would be mesmerised with the comfort and smooth drive with least traffic and no honking while your eyes feast on the beauty that nature offers.

  • 2. A sea and an ocean both of your sides: As you drive thru you can witness two different hues of the huge marine bodies on both of your sides, one is the Bay of Bengal (Sea) and the other is the Indian Ocean. Former is green in color and the latter is blue. You will feel where on earth I can witness such a road stretch wherein 2 different hues of sea/ocean can be seen together while you drive in.

  • 3. Tip of India from where Sri Lanka is only 18 kms away: You can actually feel you are at the tip of India beyond which there is only water to divide between countries. Though geographically this is not declared as the last tip of India yet the feeling is unbelievable. You cannot see Sri Lanka’s land even if the weather is clear but if you are lucky enough Sri Lanka mobile phone service provider’s network may suddenly appear on your mobile! Just think how close are you to the neighboring country.

  • 4. Pamban Bridge: Yes! This is one of the world’s most dangerous bridges that exists and operates. Indian Railways trains still run on the bridge offering the passengers that thrill and adventure they come here for.

  • 5. Ram Setu/ Adam’s Bridge: Ramayana…. Yes, that's the first mythological story book we all read in our childhood days. Some say those are all stories, some say the story is based on true historical facts. Scientists are still researching this but to your surprise you will find the actual Ram Setu/Adam’s bridge here in Dhanushkodi. However, this is not visible with bare eyes. Only satellite images are available which you can check out on Youtube. The tip of the sea beach which seems walkable can be seen from where Ram Setu starts but it's not advisable since the sea is rough and one may face high tide any moment!

  • 6. Ghost Town: Since the sea is rough here and Dhanushkodi has faced so many super cyclones in the past, one such natural disaster swiped away an entire village in a few minutes leaving the town devastated. You can feel the dead town whispering in your ears and the walls crying for help!

  • 7. Pineapple! Amidst all the unbelievable and some tragic facts you can indulge yourself in freshly cut Pineapples! They are sweet, juicy and refreshing, the ultimate nature’s offering without any artificial sweetener or water added to it. A must try for you while you explore this unbelievable place having scorching sun right on top of your head.

  • 8. Ashok Stambha: India has marked its presence till the tip of the land where its area is stretched through a tall pillar showing our national emblem. You can feel the sentiment of your attachment to your country, more prominently here since the neighboring country is almost a stone's throw away!
